Hogan Personality Inventory Updated

New Questionnaire Items Stay Ahead of the Legal Curve

Some questions on the Hogan Personality Inventory are being replaced in order to update language and to stay well ahead of the ever-changing legal curve. Hogan’s experts identified 28 items on the HPI across four subscales that could be replaced with psychometrically equivalent items that lessen the likelihood of any negative legal reviews.

Hogan Assessments Systems has never been challenged for violating any employment selection guidelines with its three personality assessments: Hogan Personality Inventory, Hogan Development Survey and the Motivation, Values, Preferences Inventory. The assessments have been reviewed by many lawyers, including lawyers for more than 25% of the Fortune 50. In no case did an organization decide against the assessments based on item content or potential legal impact. Hogan items have also been reviewed by the EEOC.

All online accounts were updated with the revised instruments between March 16th and March 17th, and all new user IDs are associated with the new HPI items. As the scoring program and psychometric qualities of the HPI have not changed, there will be no differences in candidate scores. Furthermore, online assessment and administration does not change.

While the legal issues do not impact those of you using the HPI for development, the fact that the tool needs to meet the higher standards that are applied to selection measures is a good and unusual thing.
